Digital/Multimedia Editor

The Daily Catch, an award-winning, independent, online, non-profit newspaper serving the Hudson Valley, N.Y. towns of Rhinebeck, Red Hook and Clinton (2 hours north of New York City), seeks a full-time staff reporter to cover education PreK-College, including Bard College and two local school districts. Start date: Aug. 1, 2026.

Duties:

  • Cover two local public school districts for the communities of Red Hook and Rhinebeck by attending meetings and covering news as well as seeking features and enterprise stories.
  • Cover Bard College in a moment of fascinating transition as the college seeks its next president following the travails of Leon Botstein and his connections to Jeffrey Epstein. Bard’s connections to the local community are our main point of interest but increasingly the operations of the college itself have proved compelling
  • Cover the village government of Tivoli, a tiny community affiliated with Bard.
  • Develop sources throughout the institutions named above. Use social media tools, as well as official government and local commercial websites, to find stories.
  • Produce weekly “beat notes” detailing story plans/ideas for the week ahead.
  • Take photographs on your mobile phone for all stories you report

Requirements:

  • Strong, accurate, reporting and note-taking skills.
  • Excellent writing skills (with accurate grammar).
  • Intense curiosity.
  • Personality to work independently and remotely.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • B.A. or B.S. in any field
  • 1 year of journalistic work experience and clips to show it (may include internships, freelancing or work on a college newspaper).
  • A car and driver's license.
  • A laptop computer and mobile phone

Who Will Succeed in This Job: This is a terrific opportunity for the aspiring journalist who is independent enough to work remotely while having regular in-person check-ins with the Editor (herself at one time a nationally recognized education reporter who is eager to guide and train you) and The Daily Catch leadership team. You should want to work hard, engage with a wide array of reporting assignments, and feel eager to avail yourself of the expertise and attention of award-winning editors. A stint with The Daily Catch will give young reporters the bedrock training for a lifetime as a journalist and the tools, clips, and confidence to forge a satisfying career.

About Our Area: Red Hook, Rhinebeck and Clinton are rural communities of rolling farms two hours north of New York City. Red Hook is home to Bard College and a lively culture, food and music scene. Rhinebeck to our south is a historic Hudson Valley village with an Amtrak station serving the Northeast corridor, including New York City. The area overlooks the magnificent Hudson River. We are home to great hiking, cycling, kayaking, rock climbing, and nature.

Salary and Benefits: $50,000-60,000, commensurate with experience. 12 paid holidays + 15 PTO days per annum, to be used at the employer’s and employee’s mutual discretion. Opportunities to earn additional PTO. Some relocation cost reimbursement may be available. A stipend towards health insurance may be available.

Hours: 40-hour week, including coverage of evening meetings, typically 1 per week, and some weekend events.

Digital/Multimedia Editor

The Highlands Current, a nonprofit news organization that covers Philipstown and Beacon, New York, is seeking a full-time Digital/Multimedia Editor to join its newsroom.

Our mission is to be a trusted, independent and nonpartisan source of information on topics of importance to our Hudson Highlands communities. Through both our print edition, The Highlands Current, and our website, HighlandsCurrent.org, we seek to provide a vital forum for a wide range of views and to reflect the diverse interests, concerns, and experiences of our readers.

This role, working with the editor, student journalists and the rest of the team, will support The Current in expanding its coverage to adapt its high-quality local journalism to reach digital audiences. 

Responsibilities:

  • Work with reporters and other editors to create content for digital publishing, such as photos, videos and first-day stories. This may mean independently covering events to create content or accompanying a reporter. 
  • Work with the editors to identify stories in development that would lend themselves to reach digital readers (e.g., newsletters, social posts, short videos). 
  • Work with reporters to create digital formats that make our journalism more engaging online.
  • Post online stories and photos using Wordpress.
  • Suggest and schedule multimedia segments.
  • Seek out short news stories through social media, online posts or press releases.
  • Report stories as assigned.
  • Report breaking news, leveraging editorial tools (e.g., email alerts, social feeds) to alert readers.
  • Schedule and produce podcast episodes.
  • Update website guides, such as business directory and local officials.
  • Oversee schedule, curation and promotion of posts to social media

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism
  • 1-5 years of experience, preferably in multiple forms
  • Sound news judgment
  • Passion for detail and getting it right
  • Ability to meet daily deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to post in Wordpress
  • Ability to collaborate with reporters and editors on narrative forms
  • Ability to shoot and edit short videos, take news photos and record audio.
  • Ability to write news, features and sports stories

The annual base pay range for this role is:

$50,000 USD
